WHAT WE PROVIDE

We strive to create an atmosphere in which each child can develop socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. We offer an educational experience through flexible, well-planned programs. The basis of the programs is that play is learning.

Southern Highlands is a Long Day Care Centre for children ages two months through six years. Our programs cater for and respect the rich diversity of Australian society.

Children are offered opportunities to:

  • Become aware that their own feelings and emotions are natural and acceptable.
  • Learn to express themselves in constructive ways.
  • Grow in the understanding and enjoyment of themselves and others by learning to share, take turns, and play cooperatively.
  • Be active learners by exploring and organizing their world.
  • Express curiosity and wonder at all the varied and interesting aspects of life.
  • Explore new books, games, materials, and activities.
  • Try out new roles through dramatic play.
  • Build a strong background of concrete experiences for language and cognitive development.
  • Prepare for school with a School Readiness Program in the preschool room.

Guidance

One of the main objectives of Southern Highlands Centre is to help children develop self-discipline. Our guidance technique offers children clear expectations, and options encourage problem solving. To encourage this, we attempt to practice guidance which:

  • Shows each child understanding and patience.
  • Redirects the child when necessary to another activity.
  • Sets reasonable limits.
  • Is consistent, loving, and firm.
  • Helps the child talk about misunderstanding rather than hurting another child.
